Programs for Youth
Life Skills Classes

Life Skills Classes are designed to educate youth on the many topics relevant to adolescence in our society. Held on Tuesdays, each week provides a new topic. Life Skills Classes are taught by local professionals. All youth, ages 13-17, are welcome to participate. Classes are free. To register a youth for Life Skills Classes, please complete and submit the Registration Form. For more information, please call 417-522-4654. 

TIME:  Tuesdays, 4:00 - 5:00pm (Students are asked to arrive 5 minutes prior to class.)

LOCATION:  Midtown Carnegie Library
                          397 E. Central St.
                          Springfield, Missouri

To maintain confidentiality and comfort, only staff is permitted in the Community Room during class. A seating area is provided for parents and other individuals.

FEBRUARY 9- ADOLESCENT HEALTH
The basics of teen health and hygiene will be covered.

FEBRUARY 16- TEENS AND ALCOHOL
A mother tells her story about the loss of her teenage son in an alcohol-induced accident.


FEBRUARY 23- JOB READINESS
Youth will learn how to find and apply for a job. We will also focus on the interview process.

MARCH 2- SUBSTANCE ABUSE
We will cover the most commonly used drugs. Our discussion will include the dangers, side effects and myths relating to substance use and abuse. Addiction will also be discussed. 


MARCH 9- HEALTHY RELATIONSHIPS
The red flags of an unhealthy relationship will be covered as well as ways to promote positive relations with family members and peers.

MARCH 16- CONFLICT RESOLUTION
Teens will learn how to handle uncomfortable situations and prevent violence. We will also discuss ways to prevent and work through conflict. 

MARCH 23- ANGER MANAGEMENT
This class will cover the basic cycles of anger. Much like conflict resolution, we will discuss uncomfortable situations and how to control emotions.

MARCH 30- TEST TAKING / STUDY HABITS
Youth will learn study techniques, memory tricks and relaxation tips.

APRIL 6-  FINANCIAL PLANNING
We will discuss ways to earn and save money as a young adult.
